About Us

If you’re like us, you want to know everything about the person who is watching your pet
(babies as we like to call them). So, we set up this page to tell you about us, our
business, and of course our pets!!!

Denise: Denise is the main managing partner in the business. Some general information
is that she has a B.S. in Business Management. After graduating college, she worked as
an auditor for the State of Minnesota and then moved into a Senior Accounting position
with a local company. Recently she moved out of accounting and into a SCM (supply
chain management). What she is going to be doing is still up in the air. Her new
supervisor and her are making it up as they go along. The company she works for is
wonderful in the sense that they are incredibly flexible with her schedule and gives her
the option to sometimes work from home. Because of this flexibility, it gives her the time
she needs to give your pets the supreme attention they receive.

Denise grew up in the twin cities area and has been around pets her whole life. She was
one of those kids that would bring home all the stray animals she found. Her parents
were great by letting her keep some of the strays. At any given times, there were dogs,
cats, snakes, rats, turtle, etc in the house. She always had at least one dog and cat, and
that’s where her love of animals started. Growing up, she always thought she was going
to be a vet. When she started college, she got a job at a veterinarian clinic as a
veterinarian technician and worked there for quite a while. Also at that time, she started
doing pet sitting on the side for friends and family. As many people do in college, she
decided half way through to change her major from pre-vet to business. Working at the
vet clinic taught her many things including a lot of medical related information, how to
deal with different behaviors, but probably most important, it taught her she would rather
have her love of pets be a hobby instead of a career. (We're going to apologize...the
only pictures we have of ourselves are from our wedding. We're going to work on getting
more pictures in the future.)

Kelly: Kelly grew up in northern Minnesota in a small town called Thief River Falls. He
spent the majority of his childhood living in the country. Like Denise, he and his sister
found tons of strays and convinced their parents to let them keep the strays. He has
many memorable memories of his different dogs, cats and rabbits. His most favorite dog
growing up was Sam who was a collie shepherd mix. He used to ride his bike with his best
friend and the dog would follow and run aside with him. The dogs would accompany him
to the woods to build forts. He also has fond memories of his two cats Sheba and Gert,
and the rabbit that was in love with the cats. The rabbit would follow the cats around and
try to cuddle with them. The cats were fairly tolerant of the rabbit. Currently Kelly is
working at Mesaba Airlines. He has been with the same company for 11 years and he still
loves his job. He helps with the animal care of the pets we sit for.

Us: We will try to make this brief as we’re sure you don’t want to hear information
unrelated to animals. We have been doing animal care as a team since 2004. We
adopted our first pet (Zelda) together in the early summer of 2004. Towards the end of
2004, we became cat foster volunteers for PetHaven, a non-profit organization. For more
information about PetHaven, please see the “other information” tab. Over the years of
fostering cats, we have seen many different behaviors and medical issues. One example
is when you read more about our foster cat Garrett. You can see what we have gone
through with him. The saddest experience is when one of our foster cats had to be put to
sleep due to a medical issue. One of the most important things we have learned from
fostering cats is when something is a medical emergency and when something can wait.
Since 2004, we have always had at least one cat foster though usually we have two or
three foster cats and at times we have had a litter of kittens.

In the spring of 2007, we adopted Meisha, our sweet, wonderful dog. She was 4 months
old when we adopted her and cute as ever. To learn more about her, see below. Also in
spring 2007 we started doing foster care for RAGOM. We have fostered a wide variety of
different ages and sexes of dogs from RAGOM. The most challenging was a mom with a
litter of puppies. The surrendering owner told RAGOM the puppies were 6 weeks old. We
agreed to take the mom and puppies in with the thought they would be adopted out
quickly and would be able to go to their new homes in 2 weeks. When we first saw the
puppies, we knew that the age we were told was not accurate. Their eyes were just
opening and they could no walk yet. A visit to the vet confirmed our suspicions. The
puppies were, as we suspected, 2 weeks old instead of 6 weeks. At the time, the mom
was malnourished so we had to bottle feed the puppies around the clock with
supplements. It was an enjoyable experience, though tiring 6 weeks.

In the later part of 2007, we started working as independent contractors for a pet sitting
company. In 2008 we decided to branch out and start our own pet sitting company. With
our pet care background we guarantee we will provide your pet with the best care
possible!

About out pets (aka babies)
Zelda: Zelda is a Maine Coon tortishell. She has quite the personality! She is incredibly
selective on whom she likes and if she doesn't like you, she’ll make it known. For the
most part when company is over, she stays hidden in a few of her favorite spots. In the
evenings she loves to sit on Denise’s lap and get a ton of attention and treats. Since she
is a Maine Coon, she has incredibly long hair and hates to get brushed so we usually
bring her in and get her shaved a few times a year. We swear the haircuts do something
to her personality. Afterwards, she is constantly out sashaying around the room flicking
her tail back and forth. It is a real hoot. Denise says she is the sweetest cat alive, though
Kelly calls her the cat from...umm…you know where.

Meisha: Meisha is either a long haired German Shepherd, a German Shepherd cross
collie, or a German Shepherd cross something else. She has the coloring and markings
of a German Shepherd but she has floppy ears and long silky hair. We have had two
vets and a dog trainer say she’s a long haired German Shepherd and her ears don’t
stick up because they are so thick and we never taped them, so we just call her a long
haired German Shepherd. Whatever she is, she is a cutie and a gentle, sweet dog. We
adopted her when she was four months old. Ever since then, she has been use to dogs
and cats coming into our house and leaving. She is wonderful with all size dogs and great
with kids. We have watched her play tug of war with a Cocker Spaniel. She would pull
gently on the rope and let him lead her around. Even though with one tug she could have
pulled it away from him, she let him pull as hard as he could and she would match his
strength when she pulled back. If another dog wants to play, she is more then willing to
play all night long. If another dog has no interest in playing, she is fine with that and
leaves them alone. We have worked long and hard to teach her basic discipline. For the
most part she’s wonderful though she does have the horrible habit of jumping up on
guests when they first come in. We are working on this and hope to curb this habit in the
near future. Meisha LOVES all cats. Aster (our foster cat) and Meisha are the best of
friends. Anytime they see each other, they run up to each other. A lot of the time you can
find them sleeping together. Meisha loves to give tons of kisses to Aster. Our other cats
Zelda and Garrett are not to enthusiastic about Meisha so Meisha just leaves them
alone. She is the type of dog that will leave the other animals alone unless if they show
interest in her or interest in playing. She is our baby and we love her to death.

Garrett: Garrett is our long term foster cat. His story starts with a trucker finding him in
the back of his semi truck in Minnesota in winter. The trucker contacted PetHaven and
PetHaven willingly agreed to take him in. About that time they estimated his age at 6
months. We think we started fostering him around January or February of 2006, though it
is hard to remember an exact month. Garrett has many issues and will probably never
find a forever home (well, we will probably adopt him soon so then he will have a forever
home). Let us tell you about Garrett and his quirky behaviors. First, Garrett has this
horrible habit of over grooming himself when he gets stressed out. It started in 2007
when we went out of town for a week and he went to another foster’s house. Anytime we
leave for a few days whether he stays in our house or goes to another foster’s house, he
gets stressed out. Going to bi-monthly pet fairs also stresses him out. Since we have pet
fairs twice a month, he usually has a bare tummy and bare patches on his side. His
anxiety seems to decrease when he's with other cats. Because of this PetHaven has put
the stipulation on him that he needs to be adopted by a family that has another cat. We
have tried several medications including Prozac for his anxiety but nothing has helped.
Also, Garrett has a sensitive stomach and needs to stay on a specific food that costs
more than other cat foods. If he eats other foods, he gets really bad diarrhea. Garrett
also LOVES to eat small sparkle balls and other small cat toys. He loves it so much he’s
had to have surgery to remove them from his tummy. Since the surgery, we don’t keep
out small toys that are able to be eaten. He seems fine with that because he loves balls
and bigger sized mice. Garrett is also incredibly food motivated so we have to measure
feed him to maintain a  healthy weight. Last, Garrett is incredibly smart. He knows how to
open cabinets to get to people food. We have had to cat proof our house. We moved all
the cat food, treats, and dog stuff to a huge closet with two 8 feet by 4 heavy mirrored
glass and metal sliding doors. Garrett has taught himself how to open the doors to get to
the food. We have resorted to wedging a long stick in the track so the door does not
open, but he is learning on how to move the stick out of the way and opening the door. If
anyone knows how to childproof two closet doors, please let us know! So, now that I told
you all the quirks that Garrett has, let me tell you what a sweetheart he is. He is the first
cat to greet new cats to the house. Many cats are intimidated with other cats, especially
when they come into a new house. Well, Garrett is the welcoming party to all new cats
coming into our house. He loves cuddling with other cats and is frequently seeing
cleaning (or kissing) other cats. There have been several kittens we have fostered and
they cry a little when they come to our house. He’s always there to comfort them and
offer them companionship. He also loves cuddling with humans and can be a pain when
you’re trying to work on the computer. He feels like you should be petting him instead of
typing on a keyboard and is very insistent on letting you know his thoughts. He also is
incredibly well behaved. He never scratches on anything except scratching posts. He also
stays off counters, plants stands, the table, and everything else cats love to jump on. He
is an incredibly sweet cat.

Aster (our other foster cat): Aster is quite the hoot. She is a small girl and came from
Iowa. She has been battling an eye infection since we started fostering her back in
March. All of our friends think she’s “faking it” because whenever they’re over she
seems fine, but as soon as you bring her to a pet fair, her eyes get red and watery so we
put her back on medication. Aster is the most people friendly cat we have ever met. She
does not care who you are. As soon as you walk through the door and sit down, she
jumps on you lap and starts purring away! She also is in love with dogs. She loves to
follow them around and sleep with them if they let her. Dogs seem to love her too and
usually cover her in a layer of kisses. Maybe she just stinks to them and they’re trying to
clean her up some. Once she gets onto your lap, beware….she won’t leave it. I have
tried picking her up and putting her on the ground continually for an uncountable number
of times, yet she’d still jump right back on my lap and continues with her purring. We
have had several friends who have wanted to adopt her but are unable to due to their
living situations. We’re sure she’ll find a forever home quickly once we get on track with
going to the pet fairs on a regular basis. (Aster is also pictured above with Garrett)

Sirius and Rufus: Sirius and Rufus are two male Red Tail Boas that are very sweet.
Sirius is about 7 years old and Rufus is about 9 years old. They have a huge custom
built cage with wonderful locks. These boys live the life by basking in a heat lamp and
climbing up driftwood and logs in their cage all night and day long. Both snakes are very
docile and used to being handled by humans. Look for us in summer bringing them to a
local park to give them a chance to “stretch their leg” (well, more like slither around).

We also have experience with saltwater and freshwater fish. Back in 2007 we had a tank
of both saltwater and freshwater fish, but when we moved, the move ended up killing all
the fish in both tanks. In the future we plan to get more fish! We do have experience in
checking PH, Ammonia, Nitrates, etc.
