FAQs

We get asked many questions from clients so we decided to post the most frequently
asked questions. If you do have questions that are not on this list, please e-mail or call
us and we'll be happy to answer your questions.

If I want to select option one where my dog stays with you, can I come see your house
before making a reservation?
We understand where you are coming from with wanting to make sure your dog is
staying in a safe place, but unfortunately we can't accommodate all interested people in
visiting our house. We do assure you our house is cat and dogs proofed. As a
volunteer for two rescue organizations and an independent contractor for another pet
sitting company, we have gone through three home inspections and extensive
interviews, and have passed all of it with flying colors. Also, as part of our volunteer
positions, we occasionally go out and do home inspections so we know what to look for
in making sure a house is safe for pets. If you have specific concerns about your pet
and possible house hazards, please let us know so we can discuss this further.

I would like my dog to come and stay with you but I'm unsure of how he/she gets along
with cats or other dogs. What do I do?
We offer two different solutions to this. First, we can do a trial run where we will come,
pick up your dog, bring it to our house and test it with cats or another dog to see how
he/she does. This is done prior to you leaving out of town. There is a small fee plus
mileage associated with this. The second option is to plan on your pet staying with us
and for us to come up with an action plan in case this doesn't work out. We have found
that on average, 97% of dogs gets along with cats even if they have never been
exposed to them in the past. Even rarer yet is a dog that does not get along with other
dogs.

What happens if my pet gets sick when you are watching him/her.
At the first sign of illness, we first always try to get a hold of you to discuss how you
want to handle the situation. If the situation is serious or life threatening, we will next try
to get a hold of the emergency contact you listed to see how they want to handle the
situation. If we are unable to get a hold of them, we call your veterinarian (or mine) to
discuss the situation to see if this is something the animal needs to get into the
veterinarian immediately or if it could wait until you get back into town. If it is life
threatening and we're still not able to get a hold of you or your emergency contact for
authorization to see a veterinarian, we will bring the animal into the veterinarian. our
number one concern is for the safety of your pet.
The most common thing we see when pet sitting is dogs getting diarrhea which is
brought on from stress of the owner(s) being away. We always follow a regime our vet
has instructed us to do, which is withhold food for 24 hours. After that, feed a diet of
chicken & rice or beef & rice for 2 - 3 days and slowly transition back to the pets normal
diet.

With the holiday season coming up, how soon do I need to make a reservation?
The sooner you make a reservation, the better. We tend to get full during the holiday
season. Our policy is to only watch three dogs in our house at a time to ensure all the
pets get enough individual attention. Also, even though there are more slots available
for us to come to your house, those also tend to fill up quickly.

I would prefer my cat come stay with you but he/she tends to hide at other people's
houses. How do you handle this situation?
We offer cat lovers two options. Usually with all cats, we'll slowly acclimate the pet into
the house by putting them in a bedroom with their litter box, water, food, window perch,
and toys for 2 hours. We bop in to visit and play every few hours and to see how they
are doing. If they seem to be doing well, we'll allow them to roam free afterwards. This is
what we advise all people, who adopt a cat from PetHaven to do when they get the cat
home. Also, pet owners can request that for the whole visit, the cat stay in it's own
bedroom. Our house is wonderful in the sense that we have several spare bedrooms
that are rarely used for people.
